The structure reportedly came down at about 1:30 pm, triggering an immediate rescue operation at the scene.

Officials said one person had so far been rescued, while emergency responders continued efforts to locate and evacuate others believed to be trapped under the debris.

According to eyewitnesses, the collapsed building was being used as a paying guest accommodation and could have housed as many as 50 students when the incident occurred.

Footage from the scene showed a large crowd gathered around the collapsed structure, with local residents joining rescue workers in efforts to remove debris and search for survivors.

In one disturbing scene, a person could be seen trapped beneath a concrete slab as rescue personnel worked to free the individual.

The incident has heightened concerns in Satya Niketan, an area with a large student population due to its proximity to several colleges, particularly over the safety standards of residential accommodations.

Rescue personnel remain at the scene, using equipment to clear the rubble while taking measures to minimise the risk of further incidents.

Authorities have commenced investigations to determine what caused the building to collapse and are also assessing nearby structures to ensure the safety of residents.
