Manchester United mounted a dramatic last-gasp approach to sign Rayan Ait-Nouri on Deadline Day, according to Ben Jacobs.
While there might have been just two hours remaining prior to Tuesday’s 11pm deadline, the Old Trafford hierarchy reached out to bitter local neighbours Manchester City over a potential deal.
Although young full-back Harry Amass might have eventually stayed put in the red half of Manchester following intense Championship interest on Deadline Day, Michael Carrick’s side were keen on adding another left-back to their ranks.
While Ait-Nouri might have arrived at the Etihad only last summer for a reported fee of £31million, the former Wolves defender has flattered to deceive.
The Algerian international could only muster 17 Premier League appearances in Pep Guardiola’s final campaign and only featured in a pair of City’s final six matchups across all competitions.
Once again left as an unused substitute during City’s 4-1 victory away at Crystal Palace last weekend, the 25-year-old is yet to make a single competitive appearance under Enzo Maresca.
With both Josko Gvardiol and versatile England international Nico O’Reilly ahead of him in Maresca’s left-back pecking order, there was speculation earlier in the summer that Ait-Nouri could already be pushed out of the Etihad exit.
However, despite Manchester United‘s dramatic last ditch attempt on Deadline Day, Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported that City would not be allowing the 34-cap international to leave and quickly squashed their approach.

Unclear if talks are going to progress this evening following an initial approach. #MCFC believe a deal is unlikely.🇩🇿
