Man Utd urging patience with summer signing who ‘struggled’ in Como – Will he prove doubters wrong?

· · 2 min read

Manchester United are placing high hopes on Tynan Thompson, despite his early struggles at Carrington.

The Premier League giants had an excessively quiet summer transfer campaign. They almost exclusively focused on the midfield revamp, signing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba.

The only other first-team arrival was backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow. Nevertheless, INEOS made a few interesting moves in the youth section, and chief among them was Thompson.

The 18-year-old is considered among the most exciting teenagers in the country after his exploits with Tottenham’s U21 side last season.

Unlike other youngsters who were poached for free, Man Utd were happy to spend £8 million to secure Thompson’s services.

The left winger was initially tipped to play a hybrid role between United’s U21 side and Michael Carrick’s first team, offering additional depth behind Matheus Cunha, Marcus Rashford, and Patrick Dorgu.

However, the early Carabao Cup elimination will hamper his chances of earning minutes. The London native has yet to make his senior debut, with no signs on the horizon.

On Wednesday, Thompson started for Man Utd’s U19 team, which took on Como U19 in the UEFA Youth League.

While the young Reds didn’t suffer a heavy defeat like the seniors later in the day, they still returned home empty-handed after losing 1-2 to their Italian hosts. Jack Fletcher’s second-half goal wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.

According to The Sun journalists Katherine Walsh and Samuel Luckhurst, Thompson ‘struggled’ in his outing against Como. The winger’s performances are beginning to draw criticism from fans and observers.

Nevertheless, Man Utd still believe in the teenager’s talent, tipping him to overcome his early difficulties and become an added asset to the first team at some point.

All judgement on Thompson should be postponed

Unfortunately for Thompson, he finds himself at a club engulfed by a toxic atmosphere. Even the youth sector has had its fair share of the drama, with JJ Gabriel refusing to play and trying to force his way out of the club.

If the most talented players in the senior squad haven’t been able to find their footing since the start of the season, one can hardly blame a teenager for playing below his level, especially while he’s still adjusting to his new surroundings.

Moreover, the metrics above prove he hasn’t been as lacklustre as some are trying to paint him, as he’s been able to provide his teammates with three assists.

Therefore, passing a judgment on Thompson would be incredibly immature at this stage.
