Man City hand Gvardiol new five-year contract

Manchester City have tied defender Josko Gvardiol down to a new five-year contract.

Gvardiol has established himself as a key player at the Etihad Stadium since joining from RB Leipzig in a £77.5m (€90m) deal in 2023.

He has made 122 appearances for the club overall, helping them win the Premier League in his debut season, then clinch an FA Cup and EFL Cup double in 2025-26.

Since the Croatian arrived at City, only Bernardo Silva (154), Phil Foden (152), Erling Haaland (145) and Jeremy Doku (131) have made more appearances for the club.

Gvardiol has contributed to 32 clean sheets in that time, while contributing 13 goals and seven assists. 

He leads all City players for interceptions (125) since the start of 2023-24, while only Silva (124/233) has won or attempted more tackles than the 24-year-old (112/170).

Gvardiol’s previous contract still had two more years to run, but City have moved early to ensure his future is committed to the club until 2031.

“As soon as I knew City wanted to renew my contract, I felt straight away it was what I wanted,” Gvardiol told the club’s website after putting pen to paper.

“The City fans have been unbelievable with me from day one, and the club provide absolutely everything for players. It’s the best club in the world to be at.  

“I have felt so much love and respect during my three years here, and I don’t take that for granted.  

“The players we have here are amazing. This is a world-class squad that is young and full of potential. I truly believe we will have a lot of success in the coming years.”

Eleven of Gvardiol’s goals for City have come in the Premier League, with Virgil van Dijk the only other defender to find the net that many times in the competition since the start of 2023-24.

His 2025-26 season was disrupted by injury, with a broken tibia causing him to miss four months before returning in May.

He appeared in all four of Croatia’s World Cup games, albeit coming on as a substitute twice, as they reached the round of 32 before losing to Portugal, with Gvardiol having a potential late equaliser controversially disallowed for offside.

Gvardiol could be involved when City open their first pre-season campaign under Enzo Maresca on Saturday against Inter, who are reportedly close to signing their former centre-back John Stones on a free transfer. 

City will also face a K-League All-Stars team and Atletico Madrid during their pre-season tour of Asia, before taking on Arsenal in the Community Shield on August 16.
