Man City ‘deserved more’ against PSG, claims Maresca

Enzo Maresca felt Manchester City’s display against Paris Saint-Germain merited a better result.

City found themselves 3-0 down inside 32 minutes at Etihad Stadium, where former boss Pep Guardiola took in his first game since leaving the club.

Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha were on target as the Champions League holders laid down a marker, with City conceding three goals in the first half of a home game for the first time since November 2015 against Liverpool in the Premier League.

Maresca made three changes at half-time, and one of those substitutes, Iliman Ndiaye, curled in a cross for Erling Haaland to score in the 53rd minute. In the process, the striker surpassed Sergio Aguero as City’s all-time leading Champions League goalscorer.

City had the impetus, yet a blunder from Gianluigi Donnarumma gifted Maghnes Akliouche a goal. Haaland pulled another one back, only to then squander a golden chance to make it 4-3. Ferran Torres missed a late penalty, but the hosts’ comeback hopes fell flat.

Maresca’s team ended with 2.57 expected goals to PSG’s 1.83 xG, and the Italian felt City’s performance was worthy of more.

“We started quite well, until the first goal, and then we concede the second one after one minute,” he told TNT Sports.

“That created some bad feelings. Second half, we were much better and probably deserved something more.

Manchester City 2-4 Paris Saint-Germain Man City made a fight of it in the second half, but the game was won before half-time. A great game for the neutral, but some questionable defending from both sides at times.

“It was a bit strange, to be honest. Until the first goal, we started quite well, we were in the game, then we conceded the first and then the second one. We adjusted something. We created enough to deserve something more.

“We adjusted a bit when we were pressing. I think we lost a bit of the balance.

“Even with 3-0 in the first half, with the amount of chances we created in the second half, we deserved more. Luis [Enrique] said at the end of the game that they were quite lucky today.

“You have to be clinical but not lose the balance.”

City have lost four of their last seven Champions League home games (W3) – more than their previous 50 beforehand (three).

PSG, though, are now unbeaten in 10 Champions League matches against English opponents (W8 D2), scoring 26 goals while conceding just 10 in this run.
