MAJOR NY Knicks Update on Trade Before Training Camp Opens: Will They Really Move Miles McBride?

Despite the recent rumors, a New York Knicks insider would be surprised if the team traded 3-and-D threat Miles McBride before camp opens. However, he does expect a deal to happen soon.

We are just days before the Knicks begin training camp for their first defense of an NBA title in 53 years. And it seems like things will be interesting this fall when it comes to who will be a part of their reserve unit.

While they lost Mitchell Robinson in free agency to the Boston Celtics, they inked Landry Shamet, Jose Alvarado, and Jordan Clarkson to new deals. They also signed two-time All-Star Andre Drummond to help fill the Robinson void. And last week they added veterans Bruce Brown, John Konchar, Drew Eubanks, James Wiseman, and Ochai Agbaji to compete for roles in the rotation this fall. Giving them 19 players to begin training camp.

On paper, it seems like the roster will be set once the camp battles are decided. However, The Athletic’s James L. Edwards III still believes a long-rumored trade by the Knicks is on the way. “The Knicks need center insurance, and it would be a shock if they didn’t add another via free agency or trade before the season starts,” Edwards III writes.

New York has Drummond and Karl-Anthony Towns as the only centers under official contracts. The Knicks insider firmly believes they could look to make a move for a third if Eubanks or Wiseman don’t impress in camp. However, he also suggested they may want to trade a player off the roster to make room for Brown or Konchar and give them a standard contract.

So who would be moved to open up a spot or get another center? There have been rumblings for over a month that the odd man out would be McBride. The Knicks have a glut of guards, and the veteran backup would hold value with other teams. But Edwards would be surprised if the man nicknamed “Deuce” were traded.

“I’d be a bit surprised if McBride is moved before the season starts,” Edwards III claimed. “Moving Pacome Dadiet and a second-round pick or two could be the easiest solution for New York to open up another roster spot. McBride is on an expiring contract and is due for a significant raise. One that the Knicks can’t afford if they’re obligated by owner James Dolan to avoid the second apron.”
