Olivia Miles is taking the WNBA by storm as a rookie for the Minnesota Lynx.

And somehow, that led to an unspoken insult toward Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark.

The words came Saturday, and they weren’t even from Miles, but from her teammate Natasha Howard.

Howard, a veteran forward, previously played in Indiana with Clark. 

Reporters asked Howard about what it’s like to play with Miles, and her words were telling.

“It’s really fun when you have a true point guard,” Howard said.

The implication being, potentially: Clark isn’t viewed by some as a true point guard.

There’s also a chance Howard wasn’t actually thinking about Clark at all when she said this. There’s no way to know for sure.

But fans were clearly running with it as evidence of some kind of negative toward Clark.

Clark is a phenomenal passer, but maybe the feeling is she goes off-script a bit more than some players might. She also does hunt her 3-point shot at times, but it’s not like Miles is averse to scoring herself, too.

Players who run an offense have to strike a balance between following the plan and deviating, between setting up their teammates and setting up themselves. It can be a delicate mix to achieve.

Howard clearly feels Miles is already doing it even as a rookie. And if you want to read between the lines, maybe she wasn’t quite as impressed with Clark in that regard.
