Lynx win 108-100 thriller over Fever despite Kelsey Mitchell scoring 37 points

Mitchell finished with 37 points, one under her career-high, to lead all scorers. She shot 14-of-21 from the floor, including knocking down 6-of-8 3-pointers. Clark followed with 19 points and 10 assists, but missed a couple of 3-pointers in crunch time that could’ve given Indiana the lead. She shot 2-for-9 from behind the arc.

The Fever cut Minnesota’s lead to 98-96 with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter with a Mitchell 3-pointer closing a 12-0 run. (Mitchell scored 7 points during the surge.)

Trailing 100-98 with 2:37 left, Indiana had a chance to take the lead on an Aliyah Boston 3-point try. But she paused before deciding to shoot and traveled while taking a step toward the arc. Following Natasha Howard giving the Lynx a four-point lead, Clark then missed two consecutive 3s.

Makayla Timpson got a layup to cut Minnesota’s lead to five with under a minute to go. But Courtney Williams then sank the dagger with 32.7 seconds remaining, hitting a floater to put Minnesota ahead 107-100.

The WNBA’s two best offenses showed their stuff

The Lynx ended a furiously paced first quarter with a 36-33 lead. The 69 combined points tied a WNBA record for most scored in a game’s opening 10 minutes. Mitchell had 17 points, hitting all four of her 3-point shots to lead the Fever. Miles countered with 9 for Minnesota, shooting 4-for-4 from the floor, with 4 assists.

During a halftime interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe, Miles said that having to defend Mitchell was her “Welcome to the W” moment. Yet the rookie gave her veteran opponent plenty to handle as well.

Minnesota showed why it’s the best team in the WNBA during the second quarter, pulling away to go into the half with a 64-53 lead. Miles scored 14 points, shooting 6-for-8 in the frame.

The Lynx increased their lead to 71-56 at the 8:11 mark of the third quarter, but Indiana went on a 15-6 run to trim its deficit to six points. Minnesota restored its lead to 11 points by the end of the quarter with Napheesa Collier scoring 8 points in the final three minutes.
