Lukas Hornicek has now signed for Newcastle United.

The club officially announcing this on Monday morning.

The club’s official statement beginning:‘Newcastle United are delighted to announce the signing of Czech Republic international goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček from Portuguese side SC Braga. The 24-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee and has penned a five-year-deal at St. James’ Park.’

The usual ‘undisclosed fee’ but it has been widely reported thatNewcastle United triggered the goalkeeper’s €30m (approx £25.7m) contract release clause.

Lukas Hornicek follows Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba through the door. The near £26m transfer fee also takes the summer spending beyond the £150m mark.

Lukas Hornicek on joining Newcastle United: “The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster from when I first heard about the move and now I’m so happy to be here. It’s a brilliant opportunity in a new league, which I’m very excited about. From the very first moment I arrived here, I received a fantastic welcome and really felt the warmth of the club. Everyone has been brilliant in helping me settle in. I know Newcastle is a huge football city, with 52,000 fans at St. James’ Park creating an incredible atmosphere and pushing the team every game. I can’t wait to play in front of them.”

The club statement going on to detail: ‘Lukáš played a key role in Braga’s journey to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals last season and was rewarded with a call-up to the Czech Republic squad for this summer’s FIFA World Cup. He also helped his side to a fourth-place finish in the Portuguese top-flight last term, keeping 12 clean sheets and conceding just 33 goals across the campaign. Lukáš spent seven years with Braga, initially joining on loan from Czech club Pardubice in 2019. He impressed enough to earn a permanent deal and, after initially starring for Braga B, established himself as their first-choice goalkeeper in January 2025. He featured for the Czech Republic at last summer’s UEFA Under-21 European Championships and won his first senior international cap earlier this year, starting in a 2-1 friendly victory over Kosovo in May.’
