With the trade deadline quickly approaching, the New York Yankees made their first big move.

The Yankees are acquiring first baseman Luis Garcia from the Washington Nationals for pitchers Jack Cebert, Ben Grable, Yovanny Cruz and Jake Bird. The deal gives New York a crucial offensive upgrade, while Washington is taking chances on a few talented arms.

Garcia should immediately slot into the middle of the Yankees’ lineup as the team tries to get by without its biggest bats. The Nationals, meanwhile, hope this deal can help them remake their entire bullpen, which was among the worst in the league.

Yankees grade: B+

• Yankees get: Luis Garcia Jr.

The Yankees’ offense has been brutal over the last six weeks, and they needed to add a powerful hitter. They do that in Garcia, who leads the NL in slugging percentage and is third in all of baseball in that category.

Garcia gives the Yankees contact and power, a good combination that should play well in Yankee Stadium. He instantly slots into the lineup as the designated hitter or first baseman along with Ben Rice, with Paul Goldschmidt getting opportunities against lefties.

Garcia doesn’t hit lefties well, and he doesn’t walk much, which limits his offensive upside. However, New York will take what it can get offensively at this point, as the pitching staff has carried the team.

The biggest question is defensive fit, which drops the grade down a few spots. Garcia is a mediocre-at-best defender, and the Yankees’ best hitter this year is also a first baseman. Additionally, if/when Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton all return, Garcia doesn’t have a clear spot in the lineup.

New York will deal with that hurdle when it arises, especially since none of the three are close to returning. For now, Garcia’s bat is a welcome addition to the lineup, and he’s under contract beyond this year.

Nationals grade: A-

• Nationals get: SP Jack Cebert, RP Ben Grable, RP Yovanny Cruz, RP Jake Bird

While the Nationals will surely miss Garcia’s bat in the lineup, they can afford to lose him to try and replenish their bullpen. Washington has sported one of the worst bullpens in baseball this year, so they acquire two pitching prospects and two major league relievers to try and add to the pitching group.

Cebert and Grable were top-30 prospects in the Yankees’ system and will both slot into the Nationals’ minor league teams. Washington will hope each of the two can develop and be an option in the coming years.

Cruz and Bird, meanwhile, should immediately enter the Nationals’ bullpen. Cruz throws 100 mph and has a ton of talent but has only a few games’ worth of experience, so he will get an opportunity to perform in Washington. Bird, meanwhile, struggled with the Yankees but is a veteran with experience who will get a fresh start as well.

In the meantime, the Nationals will hope that their strong offense can overcome losing Garcia. Washington has a few players who will now get opportunities at first base, likely Abimelec Ortiz and Andres Chaparro, while James Wood and C.J. Abrams remain front and center.
