LSU using alleged Kenny Minchey ‘quote’ as motivational tactic

LEXINGTON — Gamesmanship is in full swing with LSU football — and noted rabblerouser coach Lane Kiffin — as it prepares to take on Kentucky this weekend at Kroger Field.

A photo began circulating on social media Oct. 7 that featured UK quarterback Kenny Minchey. The photo also includes a quote attributed to Minchey that read: “LSU’s defense hasn’t seen anyone like and our offensive line yet.” The photo of the graphic was reported to have been taken at the Tigers’ football operations center. The Courier Journal confirmed Oct. 7 the photo was not, as some on social media speculated, an AI image.

Minchey’s “quote,” however, is far less clear.

He has not spoken with reporters since Oct. 3, following the team’s come-from-behind overtime win at South Carolina; Minchey did not discuss LSU at any point in his postgame news conference. There’s also no record of him ever saying this to any media outlet since he arrived at Kentucky.

A spokesperson for UK’s football program on Oct. 7 declined to comment to The Courier Journal regarding the “quote” attributed to Minchey.

During his appearance on the SEC coaches teleconference Oct. 7, The Courier Journal asked Kiffin if he could provide any clarity on Minchey’s reported dismissal of the Tigers’ defense.

“I haven’t seen that on social media,” he said, “so I don’t (have a comment).”

Until proven otherwise, Minchey’s “words” appear to be nothing more than a motivational ploy by Kiffin and his staff to energize LSU’s defense.

But as the No. 25 Wildcats (4-1, 2-1 SEC) prepare to welcome the 10th-ranked Tigers (4-1, 1-1) to town for a 7 p.m. kickoff Oct. 10, UK’s own defenders need no boost. Even as injuries on the unit have piled up.

They’re confident.

“Be ready. Stay ready so you ain’t gotta get ready. That’s it,” linebacker Sam Greene said. “We’re gonna win this game regardless.”
