LSU football missing projected offensive starter at practice Saturday

BATON ROUGE – For the first time early on this fall camp., LSU football was missing one its projected starters at practice Aug. 8.

Lane Kiffin and the Tigers conducts their fourth practice of the preseason Saturday at the Charles McClendon practice fields and for the second time, the team was in shoulder pads and shorts.

Media were again allowed to view two periods of the team’s session and during that time, the absence of a starter stuck out.

Here are a few notes from LSU’s fourth practice of fall camp.

Sophomore offensive tackle Weston Davis went through the first two practices that media were able to view back on Wednesday and Thursday but he was not seen at Saturday’s workout.

Coming out of spring drills a few months, Davis has been on track to resume the starting role at right tackle for Kiffin’s offense. Kiffin and his staff worked to retain Davis over the offseason after a freshman season that had a lot of bumps in the road for the 6-6, 315-pounder.

Getting reps in his place along the line was William Satterwhite II, the transfer from Tennessee. Ole Miss sophomore transfer Devin Harper and Baylor transfer Sean Thompkins Jr. were also getting reps at right tackle but they primarily worked with the backup units.

Media will hear from Kiffin following Monday’s practice, which will LSU’s next time out as it has Sunday off, and he’ll likely provide an update on Davis then especially if Davis does not practice then.

LSU’s budding star tight end Trey’Dez Green was going through drills at practice Saturday morning but notably, he was sporting a gold non-contact jersey.

Green did not look slowed or hobbled in any facet of his game. Kiffin will also likely be asked about Green and his status Monday.

Reserve cornerback Michael Turner Jr. has donned a non-contact jersey the first two times out this preseason but he was seen in a purple, full contact jersey Saturday.

It’s not clear what’s been ailing Turner as he has worked through individual drills so far in fall camp. Turner has been lining up back sophomore sensation DJ Pickett at cornerback. His development will be key as LSU doesn’t have a ton of depth at corner this season.

In the time the media were out at practice, Saturday was the best the quarterback room looked from top to bottom.

During red zone work with the tight ends, neither starter Sam Leavitt or backups Husan Longstreet and Landen Clark missed a throw. There were no incompletions – Longstreet threw one pass on a crossing route a big high but junior Malachi Thomas went up and a made a great grab.

It’s encouraging to see as camp rolls along that the quarterbacks are improving and looking better.
