Lothar Matthäus says Lennart Karl’s setback can make him stronger

· · 1 min read

There are countless songs and sayings that use resilience as a primary theme for the old adage of “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.”

For Lothar Matthäus, that is extremely pertinent to Bayern Munich phenom Lennart Karl, whose World Cup dream was cut short by a torn muscle fiber.

“It shocked me and I feel very sorry for the lad. It’s also a major sporting loss for Julian Nagelsmann and the team. Lennart Karl did very well. But he still has many opportunities ahead of him, many tournaments to come. This can make him stronger,” Matthäus said (as captured by Sky Germany journalist Kerry Hau).

Karl’s star turn this season was unexpected, but the youngster made believers out of many of his doubters. Just about every time he was give the opportunity to shine, he took advantage of it — even during high pressure situations.

The youngster would have added a key element to Germany’s attack for the World Cup, but now his focus will turn to getting healthy and looking to continue his progress next season with Bayern Munich.
