Los Angeles Queens get merry in Women’s Pro Baseball League finals

The Los Angeles Queens purge their pent-up energy with a little “merry time” before every game.

They had a merry time in the sixth inning on shortstop Caitlin Eynon’s go-ahead RBI sacrifice fly with runners in scoring position to log a 7-6 comeback win over top-seed San Francisco Firebells in Game 1 of the Women’s Pro Baseball League championship series at Robin Roberts Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

“Merry time is really important,” Eynon said in the postgame interview. “We all had a little scream, so we got ourselves amped up and we came out here and got the win.”

The Perth, Australian native swatted 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Firebells surged ahead 4-1 in the second following Amanda Gianelloni’s grand slam against starting pitcher Amira Hondras. But the No. 2-seeded Queens gradually chipped away and winning pitcher Jamie Mackay limited the damage over 5 2/3 innings in relief with two runs allowed and five strikeouts.

Mackay, Ayuri Shimano, Ashton Lansdell, Sarah Edwards and Mo’ne Davis each posted two hits.

Lansdell belted the game-tying RBI double in the sixth to set up Eynon’s pivotal at-bat.

“I knew today was going to be a good day,” Mackay said. “I told myself to just take pitch by pitch and knew my offense had my back.”

The Queens rallied ahead following Firebells relief pitcher Rosi del Castillo’s apparent leg injury while fielding a bunt attempt in the sixth. She was carted off the field with runners on the corners and no outs.
