Lord Of The Rings Star Reveals The Unexpected Moment That Changed Sauron's Biggest Scene
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power star Charlie Vickers has unpacked an unexpected moment that changed Sauron’s biggest upcoming scene. The Rings of Power season 3 is set to premiere Wednesday, November 11 on Prime Video, dropping four episodes in its eight-episode season all at once. The new season will see a major time jump in the Second Age’s timeline as the forces of Mordor battle for control of Middle-earth. In the meantime, Sauron is expected to forge the One Ring that allows him control over the other Rings of Power.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender, Vickers unpacked what’s to be expected of Sauron’s big moment forging the One Ring during The Rings of Power season 3. Speaking about the upcoming scene, he revealed that the end of the sequence involves him speaking the poem associated with the One Ring while Sauron’s theme, composed by Bear McCreary, played in the background. He teased how perfectly the music was timed with him reading the poem, giving McCreary all the credit for the sequence.
Check out what Vickers had to say below:
ScreenRant: I almost cried at the footage of you when they’re forging the One Ring. You have that moment, and then you smile like, “We nailed it.” Can you walk me through that moment and what you were feeling?
Charlie Vickers: We’d done two takes, and then we were like, “We’re just going to do one more of the final bit of me doing the ring poem, looking at it and holding it up.” And there were maybe three cameras going, so you know that this is going to be the end bit of the sequence.
We put on some songs. We tried two different songs, and I think [one] was the Sauron song by Bear McCreary; the Sauron theme song. We put that over the speakers on the sound stage where we were filming. Then I did this action. It was quite a long action of me getting up, crawling along the anvil, standing up, doing the poem, and holding my hand in the air.
And it timed perfectly with the really epic bit of the song. So much so that I think everyone in the room was like, “It’s like a live orchestra.” That’s why I started laughing, because I held it up and smiled like, “Did we get that?” And everyone started being like, “Holy s–t.” It was the music! It was nothing to do with me. It was the music.

The Rings of Power season 2 ended with Sauron ousting the Elf Adar from his throne, finally making his way to Mordor and becoming its ruler, as per the history of Middle-earth. In the meantime, the Elves have fled to a location that will become Rivendell in the future, following a battle with Adar’s forces that destroyed Eregion. Now, going into season 3, Sauron is expected to begin his ascent to ruler of Middle-earth, using the Rings and the forging of the One Ring in order to get there.
Given Vickers’ statement, it seems like the forging of the One Ring will be a massive event for the show, which will include a swelling music piece coupled with a gripping performance. While the actor didn’t paint the full picture, leaving some details for when the series airs, the moment sounds like it’ll be one of the most memorable in the series. Whether other characters in The Rings of Power will be present remains uncertain, but either way, Sauron’s presence will be bolstered by his continued rise to power.
The Rings of Power season 3 marks a major turning point for the series. It will be the first season to be released over the span of three weeks instead of a typical one episode per week release schedule. Season 3 will also be the first season to be written entirely by a three-writer team, consisting of showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, alongside Justin Doble. It will also see a number of familiar faces added to the cast, such as Stranger Things alum Jamie Campbell Bower as Celeborn, Galadriel’s husband, and Simon Pegg as the voice of the Balrog.
The forging of the One Ring, however, is the most vital event of the season. It will alter the trajectory of the show and of Sauron’s conquest, focusing on how he becomes even more powerful in his quest to overtake Middle-earth. With The Rings of Power season 3 only a few weeks away, it won’t be long until the show fully unveils the forging of the One Ring, and emphasizes Sauron’s continued growth in power as his plot unravels.
