Rumours have appeared in recent days suggesting Liverpool would be open to offers for Virgil van Dijk this summer. However, The Athletic journalist James Pearce says such suggestions are “wide of the mark”, that the Merseyside club have no intention of letting their captain leave and that newly appointed head coach Andoni Iraola is counting on the Dutch defender for the upcoming season.
Set to turn 35 in a few days, Van Dijk was one of a number of Liverpool players whose form was perceived to have fallen significantly throughout the 2025-26 season, following a title-winning 2024-25 campaign. And yet, he still managed to top the Premier League chart in aerial duels won while playing every minute of every game.
He is now expected to help young teammates, namely Jeremy Jaquet (20) and Giovanni Leoni (19), to adapt and develop into centre-backs fully capable of competing in the English top flight.
Van Dijk is on holiday at the moment, following the Netherlands’ exit from the World Cup, and he is expected to report for pre-season training soon.
