Liverpool leading the race to sign South American talent making waves this year

Liverpool have emerged as serious contenders for Defensor Sporting winger Nicolás Scotti, with the 16-year-old already attracting attention from clubs across Europe and South America.

The Uruguay youth international has only recently stepped into senior football, but his pace, close control and ability to play from either flank have quickly put him on recruitment lists.

Liverpool’s interest also fits their wider strategy of identifying elite prospects before their value rises dramatically.

Liverpool among frontrunners for Scotti

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are currently one of the most prominent European clubs pursuing Scotti.

Arsenal and Manchester United are also tracking him, while Borussia Dortmund, São Paulo and Atlético Mineiro have made their interest known.

The report adds that Scotti has a release clause of around $8million (£6m/€7m), although Defensor Sporting’s financial position could potentially allow a deal below that figure.

Scotti’s senior career is still at a very early stage. The Uruguayan Football Association lists him as a forward born on November 26, 2009 and part of the country’s Under-17 setup.

His first-team exposure is growing too. Official AUF data records four senior league appearances and 85 minutes for Defensor Sporting this season, while FBref has also documented his breakthrough into the senior squad.

The timing of any Liverpool move would be complicated by his age. FIFA rules generally prohibit international transfers involving players under 18 except in narrowly defined circumstances, meaning a permanent switch to England could not simply be completed immediately.

Reds are right to make a move early

This is exactly the type of recruitment battle where acting early matters.

Scotti has barely begun his senior career, so Liverpool would clearly be buying potential rather than a finished product.

That carries risk, but a fee in the region being reported is relatively modest compared with what top South American prospects can cost after one or two breakthrough seasons.

There is also no need to rush his development. A future agreement followed by continued football in Uruguay could allow Scotti to mature before being introduced to the demands of English football.

Competition is the bigger concern. Dortmund have built a strong reputation for developing young players, while Arsenal and Man United can offer their own convincing pathways.

Liverpool therefore need more than money. A clear development plan, regular communication and a believable route towards first-team football could ultimately prove decisive.

At 16, Scotti remains a prospect rather than a guaranteed future star. But Liverpool’s willingness to position themselves this early suggests they believe his ceiling could be extremely high.
