Munoz Deal Emerges From Nowhere

Liverpool may be about to deliver another transfer twist few saw coming. According to Fabrizio Romano, Victor Munoz is now set to join Liverpool after the club activated the €40m release clause in his Osasuna contract.

For a deal that appeared to be drifting towards Newcastle United, this is a sharp reminder of how quickly Liverpool can move when an opportunity aligns with their recruitment model.

Newcastle Blow Adds Extra Edge

The situation carries added intrigue because Newcastle were believed to be leading the race. Reports in Spain had suggested Munoz had turned down Liverpool and was expected to move to St James’ Park, particularly after the Magpies sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona.

Instead, Liverpool have stepped in decisively. Personal terms are reportedly agreed, and the transfer now looks close to completion.

There is an obvious echo of previous Liverpool business here. Cody Gakpo arrived in January 2023 with little warning. Dominik Szoboszlai followed in July 2023. Last summer, Newcastle were also keen on Hugo Ekitike before Liverpool moved faster and secured the player.

Munoz Profile Fits Liverpool Plan

At 22, Munoz represents the sort of signing Liverpool have often targeted, young enough to develop, established enough to contribute, and carrying a strong technical education.

He spent time at Barcelona’s La Masia and in Real Madrid’s youth system before moving to Osasuna in 2025.

His form at Osasuna has clearly elevated his profile, with Spain including him in their FIFA World Cup 2026 squad. He did not feature in their opening game against Cape Verde, but his club future now appears to be moving rapidly.

Salah Question Still Looms

For Liverpool supporters, the obvious question is whether Munoz is being signed as part of the Mohamed Salah succession plan or as one piece of a wider attacking rebuild.

That distinction matters. Munoz brings pace, technical quality and upside, but replacing Salah is not a single-player task. It is a structural challenge, involving goals, creativity, pressing, decision-making and personality.

Still, as a first signing of the Andoni Iraola era, this would be a fascinating statement. Liverpool appear to be acting early, acting quietly and acting with conviction.

If confirmed, Victor Munoz to Liverpool would not merely be a smart piece of recruitment. It would suggest the club are already trying to reshape the attack before the market fully catches fire.
