Liverpool have strengthened their defensive options after confirming the signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan.
Araujo’s deal also reportedly includes an option to buy for around £47.14m (€55m), with Liverpool covering the Uruguay international’s wages for 2026-27.
The 27-year-old can operate at centre-back and right-back, providing cover for Andoni Iraola in two areas that have been struck by injuries ahead of the new campaign.
Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley and Jeremy Jacquet are all out injured, though the latter is expected to return to the fold this week having missed Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Monaco on Sunday.
Aruajo was made captain of Barcelona as recently as January, though his on-pitch role was limited under Hansi Flick with Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia preferred at the back.
He was restricted to 16 starts in all competitions last season, having only made 17 in 2024-25. In each of Barcelona’s previous three campaigns, Araujo started at least 30 games.
The defender was also granted a mental health break of just over a month midway through 2025-26, but he is now relishing the chance to play in the Premier League.
“I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy,” Araujo told Liverpool’s website. “I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history.
“I’m excited about meeting my team-mates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated and really up for getting going.
“I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take.
“As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly. As I say, I’m super happy to be here and excited to get started.
“I’m glad about the interest, and it was the right move at the right time.”

Araujo’s move to Anfield was already confirmed by Flick over the weekend, with international team-mate and former Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez also wishing him well.
He will also bring experience into Liverpool’s defence. During his seven years at Barcelona, Araujo has made 213 appearances across all competitions for the Blaugrana.
Aruajo has won eight major honours in Spain, including three LaLiga titles, and his arrival comes at a crucial time ahead of Iraola’s maiden campaign beginning on August 23 away to Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Liverpool were beaten 3-2 by Monaco at Anfield on Sunday, with Virgil van Dijk partnered by 18-year-old Ifeanyi Ndukwe before Wataru Endo and Luke Chambers played at the heart of the Reds’ defence for the final half an hour.
Araujo could make his debut for Liverpool in their final pre-season friendly against Como this Sunday, with Iraola’s side expected to bring in more signings at the other end of the pitch this summer.
Paris Saint-Germain duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye have been linked with a move to Merseyside, though nothing has been agreed yet. Liverpool have already signed Victor Munoz from Osasuna this summer.
