No. 17 Iowa pulled off the stunner of the college football weekend, securing a last-second win against No. 18 Michigan at the Big House to leave the home crowd in disbelief.
It was a back-and-forth affair all night, but the final possession came after the Iowa defense forced a three-and-out to get the Hawkeyes one more shot at the end zone starting from their own nine-yard line with less than two minutes to play and just one timeout remaining. An unnecessary roughness penalty with 30 seconds to play gave Iowa some life, moving them past midfield. One more completion got the Hawkeyes to the Michigan 16-yard line with two seconds to play.
On the final snap of the game, quarterback Hank Brown threw an absolutely gorgeous back-shoulder pass to receiver Reece Vander Zee, who made the catch to secure the win. It was an amazing play, but on the CBS broadcast, the reaction was somewhat subdued as Brad Nessler and Charles Davis wanted to be sure on the call before making anything official. Given how the last dramatic Michigan game ended, that concern was understandable.

Thankfully, for anyone looking for a more excited call of the play, there was Iowa radio announcer Gary Dolphin, who had a masterful summation of the moment.
“Here’s the snap. Brown straight back. Throws to the corner of the end zone—CAUGHT. It’s caught! Touchdown Iowa! Touchdown! Touchdown Iowa! The game is over! The Hawks have won it!”
Bonus points for Dolphin, as you can hear the game officials say “the game is not over” as they prepare to check the review right after he declared the game over. Time would prove him correct.

Understandably, the call from the Michigan radio team was not as enthused with the result.

It’s a heartbreaking finish for the Wolverines, but after their dramatic escape against Western Michigan just a few weeks ago, this result felt like a bit of cosmic justice.
Iowa is set to host No. 7 Ohio State next weekend, and after this win, it likely has a good shot at hosting ESPN’s College GameDay before kickoff.
