Left-back set to leave Liverpool as soon as January window opens

· · 2 min read

All the focus among the Anfield faithful is currently on who Liverpool will sign in January, but a departure could be on the cards first.

Several of Andoni Iraola’s players have been disappointing this season, failing to live up to the high standards set in previous campaigns.

This has led to speculation that there could be a few big exits in the upcoming winter window as well as reinforcements.

There is of course plenty of interest in the majority of Liverpool’s squad, but one star that has failed to impress under the Reds’ new management is now nearing the exit door.

Liverpool left-back set for January exit

One of the biggest debates at Anfield this season has centred around the left-back position.

Many have become frustrated with Milos Kerkez, but Kostas Tsimikas has hardly showered himself in glory when he has been given opportunities to impress.

The third option available to Iraola, 22-year-old Luke Chambers, has only played five minutes for the first-team this campaign.

Now, according to a report from TEAMtalk, Chambers is being targeted for a permanent move away in the winter window.

Celtic are reportedly the side keen on bringing in the Englishman, who has spent time on loan at Charlton, Wigan and Kilmarnock in recent seasons.

The report states that Chambers is expected to leave on loan when the January window opens, but the fact that he is into the final 12 months of his deal could lead to a permanent deal being struck.

Celtic also reportedly view the fullback as a long-term project, further increasing the likelihood of a transfer rather than a loan.

Iraola has shown he is willing to put a lot of trust into his youngsters, but Chambers has failed to earn himself a place in the team and a move away from Merseyside could be best for the young star’s career.

If Celtic do make an approach to take Chambers on a permanent basis, it wouldn’t come as a big shock to see Liverpool accept.
