Leeds United have given Daniel Farke a promising platform to build on during their second consecutive Premier League campaign, but maintaining that progress will require careful decisions in the transfer market.
The Whites sit seventh after seven league matches, collecting 10 points from two wins, four draws and one defeat. They have scored nine goals and conceded six, giving Farke reason to feel encouraged by his side’s defensive organisation. However, Leeds suffered a 6-3 defeat against Chelsea in the EFL Cup third round, exposing the demands of competing across multiple competitions.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has established himself as the first-choice centre-forward, leaving limited opportunities for his fellow senior striker. Leeds need sufficient cover for injuries, suspensions and demanding fixture schedules, particularly if they intend to maintain their early league position.
Their recruitment plans could determine how effectively Farke manages that challenge during the winter window.
Leeds United consider January exit for 27-year-old striker
According to an exclusive report by Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke, Leeds United are prepared to sell Lukas Nmecha in January, provided they secure a replacement first.
The 27-year-old German joined Leeds from Wolfsburg as a free agent in 2025 and has struggled to secure regular minutes behind Calvert-Lewin. His contract expires in June 2027, while negotiations over an extension have stalled.
Nmecha has made seven appearances across all competitions this season, recording two assists without scoring in 224 minutes, according to Opta Analyst. His mobility, experience in German football and ability to operate centrally offer useful depth. However, his limited involvement raises questions about whether he can deliver consistently when handed extended opportunities.
Several Bundesliga clubs, including FC Köln, reportedly hold interest in the forward. January would allow foreign clubs to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with him.
Leeds have identified Rennes striker Esteban Lepaul as a potential solution. The 26-year-old Frenchman scored 20 Ligue 1 goals last season and has already registered seven in his opening seven league matches this term. His recent senior France caps prove his growing reputation, although competition from Everton and other Premier League clubs could complicate negotiations.
Should Farke risk losing Nmecha before securing a replacement?

Leeds should prioritise recruitment before approving Nmecha’s departure. His contract situation creates financial pressure, but selling their only natural alternative to Calvert-Lewin without another striker would leave Farke exposed during a demanding campaign.
Lepaul offers an attractive profile, having recent scoring form with experience in French football. His 27 league goals mean that he could compete for minutes immediately. However, Leeds must assess his pressing, physical suitability and ability to adapt to Premier League defenders before committing substantial funds.
The club should negotiate a replacement deal first, then pursue a sale at a reasonable fee. If Rennes demand an unrealistic January premium, retaining Nmecha until summer may represent the safer option. Losing him for nothing would hurt financially, but sacrificing attacking depth could cost Leeds valuable league points.
