Leeds complete Elvedi signing

After 11 years at Borussia Mönchengladbach, Nico Elvedi has left the club to join Leeds United on a permanent deal, with both clubs confirming the transfer on Wednesday.

“Legend is a word you shouldn’t use lightly, but Nico Elvedi is a true Borussia legend! Eleven years at the club, 364 competitive appearances, a consistently important player and a leader who never needed to say much. Losing someone like that is painful, both on the pitch and on a personal level. But Nico made it very clear that he wanted to take on one more new challenge in his career,” said Gladbach head of sports Rouven Schröder. 

“Given everything he has done for Borussia, and the exemplary way he has handled this situation too, we felt we had to respect that wish as long as the financial terms were right. Those conditions have now been met. We want to thank Nico wholeheartedly for everything he has done for Borussia and wish him nothing but the best for the future!”

Elvedi, who made 364 appearances for Gladbach, also reflected on his departure:

“I came to Borussia at 18 without really knowing what to expect. I went on to experience so many special moments here, meet so many wonderful people and make friends for life. This club has become incredibly important to me and feels like a family. It’s not easy to leave, but I feel the time is right for me to experience something new. I want to say thank you for eleven years that have shaped me enormously and made me the person I am today. I’m especially grateful to the fans, who have always supported me. I’ll keep a very close eye on everything that happens at Borussia and will do everything I can to come back and say goodbye to the fans in person,” he said.
