LASG Trains Senior Secondary School Teachers on Strategic Leadership, Innovation

The Lagos State Government, through the State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), has commenced a two-day capacity-building workshop for senior secondary school teachers on Grade Levels 15 to 17, aimed at enhancing service delivery and repositioning the education sector for excellence.

The workshop, holding at the State Teaching Service Staff Development Centre, Owutu, Ikorodu, is designed to strengthen the leadership capacity of experienced teachers and equip them with the skills required to drive educational transformation in the state.

Declaring the workshop open, Chairman of the State Teaching Service Commission, Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, said the programme, themed “Repositioning the Education Sector for Excellence: Strategic Leadership, Innovation and Service Delivery in Education,” was conceived to empower senior teachers as critical drivers of educational reform.

According to Peregrino, the rapidly changing global landscape, characterised by technological advancement, globalisation, and evolving workforce demands, has made it imperative for educators to adopt new approaches to teaching and school administration.

“Education today is operating in a rapidly changing world characterised by technological advancement, globalisation, and evolving workforce demands. Traditional approaches to teaching and school management can no longer adequately prepare learners for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century,” she said.

She stressed that teachers must move beyond being mere transmitters of knowledge to becoming facilitators, mentors, innovators, and change agents capable of inspiring students to think critically, solve problems creatively, and contribute meaningfully to society.

Peregrino further emphasised the importance of innovation in achieving excellence, noting that innovation extends beyond the use of technology to include improved methods of teaching, learning, assessment, and educational management.

She urged participants to embrace change, cultivate creativity, and remain open to new ideas that would enhance teaching effectiveness and improve student engagement.

The TESCOM chairman also encouraged participants to maximise the workshop by sharing experiences, exploring innovative practices, and developing strategies that would strengthen their effectiveness as educational leaders.

Other members of the Commission’s board, including Mrs. Kafayat Ajenifuja and Mr. Abiodun Bamboye, challenged participants to think differently, lead strategically, and deliver excellent service. They urged teachers to continuously seek knowledge on emerging trends, processes, and procedures in education in order to improve the school system.

In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Rafiu Olawale Ojikutu, explained that the theme of the workshop was carefully selected in recognition of the constant changes and disruptions shaping 21st-century education.

He noted that technological innovations and the emergence of digital platforms have transformed the teaching profession, making it necessary for teachers to remain ahead by acquiring the relevant skills needed to effectively engage the new generation of tech-savvy learners.

Ojikutu stated that the Commission had already initiated a series of capacity-building programmes for teachers across different levels as part of efforts to strategically reposition educators and equip them to address contemporary educational challenges.

“As a Commission, we are committed to improving the quality of teachers and educators in line with our goal of building a formidable and productive educational system capable of competing favourably with any in the world,” he said.

He concluded by charging participants to take proactive steps toward revitalising the teaching profession and addressing existing challenges to improve service delivery across schools in the state.

The two-day workshop, expected to conclude on Friday, June 26, 2026, with the presentation of a communiqué, attracted over 200 teachers on Grade Levels 15 to 17 from the six education districts in Lagos State as well as the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB).
