LaLiga: Why Mbappe wasn’t allowed to retake penalty as Real Madrid lost to Betis

Real Madrid striker, Kylian Mbappe, was not allowed to retake a late penalty against Real Betis on Friday night, even though Marc Batra encroached the area.

As a result, Los Blancos suffered their first LaLiga defeat of the season, losing 1-0 at La Cartuja.

Referee Alejandro Jose Hernandez Hernandez had awarded the kick in the 93rd minute after a foul on Vinicius Junior.

Mbappe stepped up with the chance to rescue a point for Jose Mourinho’s side, but the France captain saw his effort pushed aside by goalkeeper Alvaro Valles.

However, VAR reviewed the actions around the penalty, as Bartra appeared to have entered the penalty area before the ball was struck.

Mundo Deportivo reports that replays confirmed that Bartra was indeed the first player to breach the perimeter of the box, and he was the man who ultimately cleared the ball for a corner after Valles’ initial save.

However, a technicality involving the positioning of Bartra’s feet at the exact moment of impact proved to be the decisive factor in the VAR review.
