Lagos: Police arrest man in viral video beating toddler for failing to read

A Nigerian man captured in a viral video beating a toddler for being unable to read has been arrested by the police.

The disturbing footage, which circulated widely on social media, showed the suspect repeatedly striking the child on the head and body with what appeared to be a charger cable.

The video sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians calling for his arrest and prosecution.

Confirming the arrest, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) said the suspect was apprehended on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, after the agency received a report of the incident and established contact with the child’s mother.

In a statement, the agency disclosed that the mother informed officials that the matter had already been reported at the Imota Police Station.

“Upon contacting officers at the Family Support Unit, the Agency was informed that the survivor’s mother had initially reported the matter to the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency.

“Following the report, the alleged perpetrator was apprehended on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and is currently in police custody, as the matter has now been escalated for further investigation.

“The survivor and her mother have also been referred to the General Hospital for immediate medical attention and further assessment,” the statement read.

The agency added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
