On Saturday, the San Francisco 49ers announced that head coach Kyle Shanahan will be limited throughout the team’s training camp as he recovers from a serious car accident that occurred last week.
Assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the team’s coordinators will handle coaching duties while Shanahan is limited.
What Happened to 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan?
The 49ers made it clear that the injuries are non-life-threatening, but they are still serious. Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs, and his hand, needed more than 40 stitches in his face, and suffered a severe concussion when his car collided with an SUV near his home in Northern California, according to ESPN.
Paramedics took him to a local hospital, where he spent much of that day before being released. The other driver was not hurt, and Palo Alto police Lt. Nicholas Martinez said drugs and alcohol were not involved and no one was cited.
Perhaps most concerning is that Shanahan is still experiencing concussion symptoms, and ESPN reported that “doctors will not clear him for all activities until concussion symptoms clear.”
The 49ers released the following statement about Shanahan: “San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers.
“Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster along with team coordinators will handle head coach responsibilities during this period.”

It’s unclear how involved Shanahan will be when the 49ers kick off training camp on Sunday, but it will likely depend on how he feels and whether his concussion symptoms subside.
Foerster is a sensible choice to hold down the fort for Shanahan, as he is in his 12th season with the franchise and holds the assistant head coach title. With that said, he has spent a long career coaching offensive lines and has never run a team. At 64 years old, he takes the wheel of a Super Bowl contender.
The 2026 season is Shanahan’s 10th in San Francisco, which ties him with Bill Walsh for the longest head-coaching tenure in franchise history. Shanahan already sits third on the team’s all-time wins list at 82, and 11 more would push him past Walsh into second.
The 49ers were ravaged by injuries in last year’s camp, and that pattern followed them throughout the season. Now the health problem starts at the very top. How quickly Shanahan clears the concussion protocol will determine how involved he’ll be throughout training camp.
