Jalen Brunson Embraces Trump’s Presence with Fiery Statement
President Donald Trump confirmed he will attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Monday, June 8, after receiving a personal invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan. If he attends, it will mark the first time a sitting U.S. president has ever watched an NBA Finals game in person.
The moment carries weight. But Brunson is not getting swept up in it.
Speaking to the media ahead of Game 3, Brunson acknowledged the historic atmosphere but made one thing clear: his team is not finished.
Brunson said, “I think it’s really cool — 27 years since the last Finals here in this building. I know the fan base is really excited, as they should be, but as a team, us inside the locker room, we have more work to do.”
Brunson also shared how much playing for New York means to him personally, saying “I’m so thankful. I’m so honored to be able to put ‘New York’ across my chest. Wouldn’t trade that feeling for anything in the world.”
That is the mindset of a leader who refuses to bask in the moment. The Garden crowd, the presidential visit, the 27-year wait, none of it is changing his focus. The Knicks announced that fans must arrive at least two hours before tip-off for TSA-style security screening, with a no-bag policy also in effect for the evening.
Trump called Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns “fantastic,” adding the Knicks are “just a great team.” The president is openly rooting for New York. But Brunson is keeping his eyes on the prize, not the guest list.
Brunson’s Clutch Numbers Put Him in Rare Playoff Company
Beyond the moment, the stats tell a deeper story. Brunson has 144 playoff clutch points since 2023, more than any other player in the league. The next closest is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has 84 clutch points over the same span. His playoff career average stands at 1.47 points per minute in clutch situations on 63.4% true shooting.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson has noticed. He admitted his team sometimes has no good answer, saying “there are times where it’s like ‘anybody but Jalen, make anybody else shoot the ball.'” That is the kind of respect earned through results, not reputation.
Game 3 tips off Monday night at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with the Knicks looking to take a commanding 3-0 series lead. The Spurs, led by Victor Wembanyama, will fight to cut the deficit and keep their title hopes alive. For Brunson and the Knicks, one more step at home could change everything.
