Klopp points to Bayern star’s costly mistake after late Netherlands equaliser

Serge Gnabry‘s decision in the closing stages of Germany’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands proved costly on Thursday, as the Bayern Munich attacker lost possession before the Dutch side launched the counter-attack that led to their late equaliser.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Germany coach Jürgen Klopp suggested that Gnabry knows he should have handled the situation differently.

“That’s not a problem, it can happen. But Serge has to run forward in that moment,” Klopp explained.

“He has to take his first touch forward with the ball when you still have 20 or 30 seconds to play. But Serge obviously knows that too.”

Lothar Matthäus also highlighted Gnabry’s role in the Dutch equaliser.

“That was a great attack, but Gnabry must not lose the ball and he has to track back faster,” the former Germany international said in his role as an RTL pundit.
