Klay Thompson sends Lakers-related message on Instagram

As the second half of this summer starts to unfold, there remains the possibility that the Dallas Mavericks will trade Klay Thompson at some point in the near future. Christian Clark of The Athletic recently reported that they have “explored his trade market” and that Thompson “would welcome a return to Los Angeles.”

Thompson has spent the last two years in Dallas after playing his previous 13 seasons with the Golden State Warriors. His father, Mychal, played for the Los Angeles Lakers in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and he himself was pursued by the Lakers in the summer of 2024.

Instagram user @jellybeanballin posted an NBA 2K reel that depicted the younger Thompson playing the starting shooting guard spot on those dynastic Lakers as they powered their way to the NBA championship over the Detroit Pistons. The younger Thompson then shared that reel to his Instagram story and posted a short message, via Heavy Sports.

“This is what my dreams look like on a consistent basis,” he wrote, adding a laughing emoji. “Thank you @jellybeanballin for the simulation!”

The wing is 36 years of age and averaged 11.7 points in 21.7 minutes a game while hitting 38.3% of his 3-point attempts. He isn’t the defender he used to be, he isn’t as mobile as he used to be and his 3-point shooting is even a tad less deadly than it was several years ago. But he remains a potent outside shooting threat.

He has one year left on his contract at $17.46 million. The Miami Heat, a team that badly needs 3-point shooting around newcomer Giannis Antetokounmpo, are reportedly interested in the younger Thompson.
