Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson haven’t played for the Golden State Warriors in quite a while, but they became entangled in a lively social-media debate – flashing back to their days as teammates – in the past few days.

At the core of their exchange: Which is a better team, the Warriors with Durant (2016-19) or the current Philadelphia 76ers on paper?

That only became a reasonable question when LeBron James signed with the Sixers last month, joining Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Then, over the weekend, Durant was asked at a USA Basketball event for his thoughts on Philadelphia’s championship aspirations with James.

“Last time they put three 20-point scorers on a team, they said it was unfair – which was the team I was on,” Durant said, referring to his three years alongside Thompson and Stephen Curry. “They (the Sixers) got four 25-point scorers on this team. So hell yeah I think they’re a contender. … They’re going to be a great team to watch.”

That sparked conversation on Instagram, and Durant couldn’t resist doubling down on the comparison. He actually took it a step further, putting these Sixers ahead of those Warriors.

“Ain’t close lmao,” Durant posted. “Joel, mvp recently. Jaylen Brown, recent Finals MVP. Tyrese Maxey, all star the last 3 years. We all know what Bron does.

“Klay Thompson, never a MVP candidate in nothing, 22 ppg. Draymond (Green), 14 ppg, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, Steph a mvp just like Joel was. I don’t get how the Warriors team is better on paper.”

That Warriors team rolled to the NBA championship in 2016-17 and again in 2017-18. Its bid for a third consecutive title was derailed in the 2019 Finals against Toronto, partly because of injuries to Durant (calf/torn Achilles) and Thompson (torn ACL).

Thompson re-posted Durant’s comments, with this response: “Aye man u good?” Then Thompson tagged Durant’s account and added, “What u using my full government for,” completing the question with an emoji of an ID card (as if wondering why Durant used Thompson’s full name).

Green soon chimed in, referring to Durant by his nickname while posting, “Slim thought he was on his burner?” with four laughing emojis.

For the record, Thompson was a two-time All-Star and two-time all-NBA third-team selection (and finished 10th in MVP voting in 2015) before Durant joined the Warriors in July 2016. Curry was named MVP in consecutive seasons ahead of Durant’s arrival, and Green was an All-Star and second-team all-NBA choice in 2015-16.

James obviously brings an unparalleled resume, as a 22-time All-Star and 21-time all-NBA pick. Embiid (26.9 scoring average last season) is three years removed from his MVP season; Brown (28.7) was named Finals MVP in 2024; and Maxey (28.3) made third-team all-NBA last season.

Durant based his 76ers vote “on paper,” of course – Philly hasn’t won anything yet, unlike those Warriors in their heyday.

Thompson is entering his final season of a three-year deal with the Mavericks. Durant is signed with Houston through 2027-28.
