To get high school football fans ready for the 2026 season, The Cincinnati Enquirer sports staff will produce a generous flow of content.

A note on the record page indicated he finished high school ranked in four categories despite sitting out 34 quarters (8.5 games) because of the score, injury or weather.

Yards rushing in a game – Williamsburg running back Jason Bainum still holds the top spot in the OHSAA record books for most rushing yards in a game – 523, from his Sept. 28, 2001, game against Clermont Northeastern. He has five other games on the list – 498, fifth; 475, tied 10th; 417, tied for 35th; 415, tied for 36th; 413, tied for 38th

Yards rushing in a season – Williamsburg’s Jason Bainum had 3,386 rushing yards in the 2001 season, good for seventh overall in the OHSAA record books. He also has another season in that list – the 2000 season, when he had 3,043 yards, good for 13th.

Passing touchdowns in a game – OK, so he’s not technically from Cincinnati, but he’s the Bengals QB1. Joe Burrow of Athens was among those tied for third with eight touchdowns against Proctorville Fairland on Sept. 27, 2013.

Passing TDs in a season – Athens High School quarterback Joe Burrow (10) had 63 passing TDs in the 2014 season, good for sixth in the state.

Passing TDs in a season -Setting aside Bengals QB1, the Cincinnati guy ranked highest in this category is Moeller QB Matt Ponatoski (7), who had 57 TDs in a season for the Crusaders in 2024, tied for ninth.

Passing TDs in a career – Athens’ QB Joe Burrow had 156 passing TDs in his career from 2012 to 2014, good for third in the state.

Yards passing in a season – Western Brown quarterback Drew Novak had 5,269 passing yards in the 2021 season, good for sixth in the OHSAA record books. (Burrow had 4,437, good for 21st, in 2014.)

Yards passing in a career – Drew Novak of Western Brown had 14,127 career passing yards from 2019-2022, good for third in the OHSAA record books. Burrow was seventh with 11,428.

Receiving touchdowns in a game – CHCA wide receiver Marcus Sheanshang had five touchdowns vs. Madeira in 2025, good for third in the OHSAA record books.

Receiving touchdowns per game – Ryan Betscher of Cincinnati Hill Christian Academy also tied for third in the state with five touchdowns in a 1997 game with New Miami High School. Williamsburg’s Mike Gregovich joins Marcus Sheanshang, Jamel Howard and Betscher, pictured, as being tied for third in this category for his Nov. 31, 1994, game against Hillcrest.
