Keyser's season ends with 5-2 loss to Herbert Hoover

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — After keeping its season alive earlier in the day, Keyser’s run came to an end in the Class AAA Tournament, falling 5-2 to Herbert Hoover on Wednesday.

The Golden Tornado (25-8) led 1-0 through four innings, then the Huskies (27-9) scored one in the fifth and four in the sixth to pull away.

Leighton Johnson hit an inside-the-park home run to right in the top of the fourth to put Keyser ahead 1-0.

Herbert Hoover answered with a fielder’s choice in the fifth, then scored in the sxith on an error and three consecutive hits.

All three hits came with two outs, giving the Huskies a 5-1 lead.

Brielle Root answered with an RBI single in the top of the seventh.

With two on and one out, a fielder’s choice and pop-up ended the game.

Bibs Felton went 3 for 4 against Hoover and finished the tournament 8 for 10 with five walks and an RBI.

Leah Fouts had a pair of hits for Keyser.

Johnson struck out six across five total innings, re-entering in the sixth for Tavery Lyons.

Johnson was charged with four runs (all unearned) on five hits and a walk.

Kaylyn Harper went the distance, allowing two runs on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts for the Huskies.

Keyser reached its third state tournament in program history and second in three seasons.
