When the Detroit Tigers traded Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the deadline, plenty of people reached the same conclusion.

Detroit was finished.

Kevin McGonigle apparently heard all of it.

Following the Tigers’ 8-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night, the 22-year-old delivered a message to anyone who assumed Detroit’s decision to sell meant the players inside the clubhouse were ready to surrender the season.

“We didn’t give up on ourselves, and I feel like a lot of people gave up on us,” McGonigle said.

That’s not exactly subtle.

Nobody should confuse confidence with accomplishment.

There are still offensive problems to solve. The rotation remains a work in progress without Skubal and Mize. The margin for error gets smaller every time Detroit loses a game it had a chance to win.
