Kevin Durant dismisses WNBA culture-war noise with NSFW answer in support

For Houston Rockets superstar Kevin Durant, basketball is and will always be the main thing. He made that point clear when asked about the current state of politics in the NBA’s sister league. 

On Tuesday, Durant spoke at the Rockets Media Day at the Downtown Hilton in Houston ahead of his 19th season in the league. The future Hall of Famer fielded questions ranging from his offseason plans to how he plans to manage his minutes during the regular season. 

However, Durant offered a blunt answer when asked about the divisiveness surrounding the WNBA and his support of women’s sports going forward. 

“The politics that they bring into sports nowadays, I understand the messaging behind what they’re trying to do, but a person like me who just strictly cares for the purity of the sport, I do not give a f*** about none of that,” Durant said.  

“I do not give a f*** about none of that.”

Durant points to the WNBA’s undeniable growth

Conservative criticism has rained down on the league, with a focus on opposing biological males in women’s sports and challenging the WNBA’s self-identification and inclusion philosophies. In addition, Durant’s former teammate Enes Kanter has come out and said he identifies as a woman to make himself eligible for the WNBA Draft. 

For Durant, he continues to pay no mind to the stunts and misplaced injection into the game he loves so dearly. 

“All that stuff is just noise, man,” Durant said. “The WNBA is flourishing. Look what these women are doing. Look at the money they’ve made over the last few years. Look at the visibility of their league. They got four or five signature athletes that are representing major brands.”

Houston prepares for the Comets, Rockets return

The city of Houston is poised to join in on the fun, as the Comets’ return via the Connecticut Sun’s franchise relocation in 2027 looms large for the region. In addition, the franchise could land the next face of the league with USC’s JuJu Watkins tabbed as the likely No. 1 pick in the 2027 WNBA Draft. 

“These women have brands for themselves,” Durant said. “They’re businesswomen for themselves outside of the game.”

Before the Comets officially return to Houston and the WNBA, the Rockets will kick things off for their 60th season in the NBA.

Durant will lead a fully healthy squad that now includes veterans Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanović, along with rookie Bruce Thornton. 

The Rockets will face their in-state rival Dallas Mavericks as part of the NBA China Games. Both games are scheduled for The Venetian Arena on Friday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 11, in Macao.
