Kerkez: Liverpool fans will see aggressiveness in our game this year

Milos Kerkez has told Liverpool fans to expect “aggressiveness in our game this year” under Andoni Iraola.

Iraola was appointed as the Reds’ new boss after Arne Slot was relieved of his duties at the end of last season.

Despite winning the Premier League in 2024-25, Slot could only guide Liverpool to a fifth-place finish last term, finishing 15 points behind eventual champions Arsenal.

Liverpool’s 60 points last season are the lowest by a side to finish fifth or higher in the Premier League since Tottenham in 2006-07 (also fifth with 60 points).

Indeed, it is the joint-lowest ever by a side to qualify for the Champions League via their league position in the competition, alongside the Reds themselves in 2003-04.

However, Kerkez believes Liverpool have returned to the style of play they had under Jurgen Klopp, and is excited for the new season under Iraola.

When asked by the club website what fans should expect to see, Kerkez said: “I think the heavy Liverpool team that Liverpool used to be – press, front foot, everyone in front.

“Like I said, front-foot, full pressing.

“Anfield, obviously, is going to push us a lot, give us also that energy. When they see us pushing a lot, they’re going to give us big support home and away.

“So the big difference is going to be, I think, the pressure, the pressing, the aggressiveness in our game this year.

“I like it. You see me higher. I can play higher, going one against one.

“I’m really proud of everyone, and we’re working really hard this pre-season. You can see in training sessions, everyone is happy. We know what we have to do. A big season ahead.”

Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign on August 23 against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, while their first home game comes six days later against Nottingham Forest.
