Kane revels in Bayern’s Supercup success against Dortmund

Harry Kane believes Bayern Munich’s victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup was “an important win to start the season”.

Bayern emerged 2-1 victors at Signal Iduna Park after Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise’s first-half goals rendered Fabio Silva’s strike a consolation in the end, while Ramy Bensebaini was also sent off for Dortmund.

Bayern have won the Supercup for the 12th time, triumphing in five of their last six such matches, with their only defeat in this period coming in 2023 against RB Leipzig.

Dortmund, meanwhile, have lost their last three Supercup contests, equalling the worst losing run in the competition (also Bayern, three in a row between 2013-14 and 2015-16).

And Kane understood the importance of starting the season with silverware, even more so as they had a chance to do so in rival territory.

“It was an important win to start the season, especially away at Borussia Dortmund,” said Kane.

“It was a good way to start. We had a few chances to put the game to bed. We didn’t manage it, so it remained at 2-0 despite our dominance.

“That’s always a dangerous result, because things can get tight again. That’s what then happened, but in the end we’re pleased it was enough.”

Beginning with last season’s Supercup win over Stuttgart (2-1), Bayern have scored in 56 consecutive competitive matches, netting an incredible 186 goals in the process.

Olise was not involved in any goals in the Supercup last season, but he was directly involved in both of Bayern’s goals against Dortmund (one goal, one assist); it was his 15th competitive match for Bayern with at least one goal and one assist.

Head coach Vincent Kompany praised his side’s ability to get over the line, specifically players such as Olise, who had a limited pre-season.

“It was a very good first half. We also showed a lot of willingness in the second half,” said Kompany.

“You saw the heart and character of the team. Some of the guys had only trained a few times and played 90 minutes today – that’s impressive.

“The most important thing is the mentality, and that was spot on. We won today. From tomorrow, the focus turns to the next game.

“We’re pleased and happy today, but tomorrow we’re hungry again.”
