Junior City Golf off to eventful start

The two-round Junior City Golf tournament teed off at Rea Park on Wednesday morning with a pair of high schoolers leading the charge.

The two 15-17-year-old boys and girls along with the 13-14-year-old boys played 18 holes, while the 10-and-under group played nine holes.

Terre Haute North senior-to-be Keegan Reddy leads the 15-17 boys with a first-round score of 71. Reddy said he thought his Patriots squad had a good finish to the high school season.

“We lost a couple tournaments and they’re ones we know we should’ve won,” Reddy said. “It was really nice to win [the] sectional as a team. It was a really group effort.”

Reddy knew he had competition going into the Junior City.

“There are a lot of people, lot of great golfers in the tournament,” Reddy told the Tribune-Star. “You have to stay in your zone, focus on your own score, control what you can control, just try to grind it out.”

He acknowledged the heat as well. The mid-80s weather wasn’t as hot as it was a few days ago, but it still had an aspect on the golfers.

As far as preparing for the tournament, Reddy said all the guys have been playing a lot of golf this summer. He mentioned that he played a couple of practice rounds before the tournament started.

Going into the next round, Reddy said he’s going to try to stay solid on the greens and not give up any unnecessary shots such as three-putts, bad dips.

“Just control what needs to be done,” Reddy said.

Terre Haute South senior-to-be Holly Clapp, 17, holds the girls 15-17 lead with a first-round 79. She would like to have done better Wednesday, bet mentioned she had two birdies and is hoping she can play a little bit better Thursday.

She said she hadn’t been out to Rea Park since last season, but has been playing at the Country Club of Terre Haute quite a bit and in other tournaments before this one.

“I need to work on some of my second shots and some of my putts,” Clapp assessed. “Not a lot of them drained like I thought they were and some of them weren’t so straight.”

Clapp thinks Thursday will be a little bit better for the final round.
