Seattle Seahawks star Jaxon Smith-Njigba didn’t hide his frustration after the team’s Week 5 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
According to The Athletic’s Andrew Destin, Smith-Njigba took responsibility for the loss after the dust settled, attributing the defeat to the offense’s shortcomings as they did not capitalize enough on strong efforts from the defense and special teams.
“We’re pissed,” Smith-Njigba said. “We wanted this one. And like I said, defense, special teams, they deserved this win. It sucks as an offense, myself, I feel like we let them down.”
Smith-Njigba was a bright spot in the passing game, recording five receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown. However, Seattle struggled to find consistency offensively, with Sam Darnold throwing for 195 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions and no other Seahawks receiver outside of JSN going for more than 24 REC yards on the game. The Seahawks’ ground game produced 89 rushing yards, but was unable to compensate for blunders made on offense.
Defensively, Byron Murphy II made his presence felt with a disruptive performance against San Francisco, which included two sacks, three tackles for loss and three quarterback hits, while Nehemiah Pritchett contributed with an interception and great play on special teams. Kicker Jason Myers also delivered, converting all five of his field-goal attempts and both of his extra point attempts to keep Seattle competitive.
Despite those contributions, Seattle was not able to overcome its offensive mistakes, leaving Smith-Njigba and the Seahawks searching for answers after a disappointing defeat.
