Journalist confirms Arsenal step up centre-back search with rival player firmly on their radar

Arsenal’s search for defensive reinforcements has taken another step forward, with Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa emerging as a serious option for Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners have already strengthened heavily this summer, including the £75 million arrival of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United, but injuries have shifted attention towards the back line.

William Saliba is sidelined with a back problem, while Jurriën Timber remains weeks away from returning, leaving Arsenal keen to add another defender before the window closes.

The England international’s ability to operate both at centre-back and right-back makes him particularly attractive to Arteta, who regularly uses defenders in multiple positions.

The interest also appears to have progressed beyond a simple enquiry. The Guardian reports that Arsenal have already had an offer rejected by Aston Villa and are expected to return with another bid.

Konsa has become one of Villa’s most dependable defenders, so Unai Emery’s side have little reason to accept a discounted offer.

Konsa makes sense for the Gunners but not for £60m

From a football perspective, this is an easy transfer to understand.

Arsenal need immediate cover because of Saliba and Timber’s injuries, but they also need someone good enough to remain valuable once both players return.

Konsa fits that requirement because of his Premier League experience and versatility. The concern is the price.

Spending £60m on a 28-year-old who could eventually become more of a rotation option would be difficult to justify, particularly after Arsenal have already invested significantly this summer.

A deal closer to £40m would look considerably more attractive. Villa are entitled to hold firm, but Arsenal are also strong enough defensively to avoid making a panic purchase.

Konsa would undoubtedly improve Arteta’s options and could immediately cover Saliba’s absence.

But the Gunners should remain disciplined. If Villa soften their demands, this could be excellent business.
