Joshua-Fury fight: Battle intensifies over New York, Wembley venue

There has been a tug-of-war over the venue for the proposed Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua heavyweight fight.

On Thursday, London Mayor Sadiq Khan insisted that he wants to host the proposed fight between the two British fighters at Wembley Stadium.

Khan also urged promoters to get in touch about bringing the long-awaited contest to the national stadium.

“A message to the promoters: We want to host it in London. Talk to us; we are really keen to have it,” Khan told BBC Sport.

“Wembley has hosted many fantastic events, including bouts involving Tyson and Anthony. We, the fans, want to see them box live in London.”

However, while organisers and broadcaster Netflix are believed to prefer New York’s Madison Square Garden for a November fight, sources close to the negotiations say London venue talks have stalled, with no concrete discussions on dates or schedules, according to BBC Sport.

The venue is expected to be finalised soon, with Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, pushing for an announcement this week and a press conference scheduled for next week.
