The Michigan Wolverines football program, ever at the center of controversy, found itself involved in yet another national story after its 13-12 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos in Ann Arbor.
The Wolverines appeared to lose the game 12-7 after Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood’s Hail Mary attempt went out of bounds as the clock expired on NBC’s broadcast. However, the Broncos’ ensuing celebration was halted when game officials, after a video review, determined that there was actually one second remaining on the Big Ten’s official game clock.
In his second chance, Underwood delivered a moment that will go down in Michigan lore forever, connecting with wide receiver JJ Buchanan for a touchdown, sealing the victory for the Wolverines.
As great as the final result was for Michigan, the Wolverines shouldn’t have needed one of the most controversial endings in the history of the sport and a Hail Mary attempt to beat a MAC program, and according to Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt, a lot of Michigan’s struggles can be pinned on Underwood’s lackluster performance and development.
“I’m just telling you right now, guys, that the film was quite shocking,” Klatt said about Underwood, who finished the game 12-for-22 with one touchdown, 170 yards, an interception, and a fumble. “I go to the first series, and I wanted to see, like, well, was it good early and then did it, did it regress late?
“And again, the film tells you a lot more than watching the game. I’m watching the game, obviously, on the airplane, and they go down the field, but what I saw on that first series Wasn’t great. In fact, you look at the big completion that they got on the 2nd play of the game; that was a completely broken play after he dropped the snap. And then you get a one-handed catch and everyone’s energized, and that’s great. The 5th play of the game, he throws it into double coverage.”

(@Metaleka_) Per Klatt’s analysis, things didn’t improve much as the game unfolded.
“The 7th play of the game, he’s RPO; he goes the wrong direction. 9Th play of the game, they were targeted wrong on a double team on the offensive line. So this is all part of their first series, and they were still able to go down there and score. So I’m thinking to myself, like, man, did it get worse? Yeah, it got worse.
“You watch the rest of the game, and I’m just telling you right now that Bryce Underwood regressed from year 1 to year 2. He’s throwing curl routes into sitting safeties. He’s throwing spot routes and leading those players into cover 2 corners. This is day 1 quarterback stuff. These are things that you can’t do as a quarterback. And this is going to be film that is going to be incredibly hard to watch.
“For everyone on that team, because it is laid bare for everyone. It was laid bare for all of us watching. And now they’re going to go in, and they’re going to watch that film, and there’s going to be major questions about what his status is this week going into the Oklahoma game.”
Klatt wasn’t the only one who took note of the young quarterback’s struggles. On Monday, first-year Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham made it clear that Underwood has “to turn a corner” if he wants to hold onto the starting job. The Wolverines will host a red-hot Oklahoma Sooners team on Saturday in a game that will be closely scrutinized given how things went against the Broncos.
If Underwood can’t justify Larry Ellison’s massive NIL contributions to bring him into Ann Arbor, he may be on the sidelines by the time the Wolverines open conference play.
