João Palhinha agrees Aston Villa terms as Bayern rejects loan

João Palhinha has agreed personal terms with Aston Villa, but Bayern Munich has rejected the English club’s proposed loan, according to Record.

Villa wanted an initial loan containing an option to buy. Bayern is prepared to discuss Palhinha’s departure but wants a permanent transfer rather than another temporary move.

The player’s agreement removes one part of the negotiation, but the clubs remain apart over the structure. No permanent bid or proposed transfer fee has been reported.

SoccerNews previously covered Aston Villa’s confirmed interest in Palhinha. The latest development shows that the talks with his representatives have been successful, while an agreement with Bayern is still missing.

Palhinha returned to Munich after spending the 2025/26 season on loan at Tottenham. Spurs initially held a purchase option worth approximately €31 million but decided against completing a permanent transfer.

The Portugal international endured a difficult season with Tottenham as the club fought against relegation, yet he still provided five Premier League goals. One of those was the late winner in Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

His defensive work remains the strongest part of his game. Palhinha protects the center-backs, competes aggressively for loose balls and gives more attack-minded midfielders greater freedom to move forward.

Villa already knows the player is willing to join, but Bayern’s position requires a larger immediate commitment. The German club signed Palhinha from Fulham in 2024 and has him under contract until June 2028.

Bayern’s refusal is understandable after one loan failed to produce a permanent sale. Accepting the same structure from another Premier League club would risk bringing Palhinha back to Munich next summer with only one year remaining on his contract.

Villa must now decide whether to submit a permanent proposal or attempt to negotiate an obligation rather than an option. Personal terms will not complete the transfer without a formula that satisfies Bayern.

Status: João Palhinha has agreed personal terms with Aston Villa. Bayern Munich has rejected Villa’s proposed loan with an option to buy and wants a permanent transfer. There is no club agreement, medical or official announcement.
