Jim Harbaugh raves about new Chargers starting center Jake Slaughter

In the wake of Tyler Biadasz’s season-ending injury, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has made it clear that he has full faith in rookie Jake Slaughter to man the starting center position.

With Biadasz out for the year, Harbaugh did not hesitate to elevate Slaughter to the starting role, signaling a significant turning point for the offensive line just weeks before the regular season kicks off.

“Jake Slaughter is now our starting center, so that’s a big change,” Harbaugh said. “The center position, right guard, right tackle, left tackle… those four are set.”

Slaughter, an All-American at the University of Florida, was originally selected with the 63rd overall pick in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Though he spent the majority of the summer competing for the starting left guard spot, the injury to Biadasz forced him back to his natural collegiate position.

Harbaugh was detailed when breaking down what makes Slaughter ready for such a massive responsibility.

“Talent, effort, just very, very aware,” Harbaugh said. “The mind is sharp, snap, pre-snap, to the whistle, the way he understands the position… Jake has been in the system as long as Tyler has, and so it’s been the same amount of time for both of those. Very confident in Jake Slaughter being our starting center.”

Following the team’s second preseason matchup, Harbaugh reinforced that Slaughter possesses all the physical tools required to handle the demands of starting in his first year at such a crucial position.

“Every time he’s been in a game, every time he’s had to go in there, he’s a football player,” Harbaugh added. “He’s shown up. He’s got the ability to process and his athleticism, his strength, it’s all plus-plus.”

The Chargers will now look to finalize the starting left guard position, which has Kayode Awosika as the frontrunner, but Trey Pipkins III, Branson Taylor and Trevor Penning are still in the mix.
