Jets HC Aaron Glenn reveals what makes Joseph Ossai valuable

The New York Jetssigned Joseph Ossai this offseason because they needed another pass rusher that could help he could help change the complexion of their defense. He landed in Florham Park by way of a three-year, $36 million contract after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

In four seasons, Ossai has 116 tackles, 14.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and a defensive touchdown during his career. Those numbers help explain why the Jets were interested.

“He’s been pretty consistent since he’s been here and since we’ve been practicing from OTAs into training camp… The energy he brings, the players feed off that,” head coach Aaron Glenn said.

It’s a simple statement, but it says a lot about what Glenn values. Since arriving in New York, Glenn has consistently emphasized effort, accountability, competition, and energy. He wants a team that plays fast and aggressively, and he frequently speaks about players who elevate those around them.

Ossai appears to fit that mold and he’s ready to show it in Glenn’s defense.

“I just want to pop out Week 1 and people see what we’re about,” Ossai said. “Some dogs.”

While the veteran edge rusher has spent portions of training camp working his way back from injury, he recently returned to full participation. That’s an encouraging development for a Jets defense that invested heavily in improving a pass rush that struggled to consistently affect opposing quarterbacks last season.

The obvious expectation is that Ossai will help create pressure off the edge. The Jets didn’t commit significant money to him without envisioning a meaningful role in their defensive plans, but Glenn’s comments suggest the organization sees value that extends beyond game-day statistics.

Energy can be difficult to quantify, yet coaches consistently talk about its importance. A player who practices with urgency, communicates effectively, and brings enthusiasm to the field can influence an entire position group. Those traits become especially valuable during a long season.

The Jets are still waiting to see what Ossai looks like in a regular-season game wearing green and white. His return to health is an important step toward answering that question. If Glenn’s assessment is any indication, however, the Jets already believe they know one thing. Joseph Ossai’s value isn’t measured solely by how many sacks he records. It’s also reflected in the energy and enthusiasm he brings to the players around him
