Jets' final WR spot could come down to experience versus projection

The Jets are expecting big things from Adonai Mitchell, and they also used a first-round pick on Omar Cooper Jr. out of Indiana.

Wilson, Mitchell, and Cooper will be the Jets’ unquestioned top three receivers. Isaiah Williams looked like a strong bet during offseason workouts (OTAs and minicamp) to make the 53-man roster. Assuming the Jets keep five receivers, the final spot could come down to the experience of Tim Patrick versus the upside of Arian Smith.

Jets general manager Darren Mougey signed Patrick earlier this offseason after their shared experience together with the Denver Broncos. Patrick was a very impactful receiver in 2020-21, but has encountered some difficult injuries as of late. He registered 15 catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns with the Jacksonville Jaguars last year.

Smith disappointed as a fourth-round rookie last season. The former Georgia standout recorded just seven receptions for 52 yards and zero touchdowns. The Jets should make him earn a 53-man roster spot this offseason, as opposed to handing him one based on the size of the investment.
