Jesse Minter provides injury update on Ravens WR Devontez Walker

The Baltimore Ravens could regain one of their young wide receivers before Sunday’s season opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Head coach Jesse Minter said Devontez Walker could return to practice later this week. Baltimore will evaluate how Walker responds before determining whether he will be available against Indianapolis.

“He could be back practicing later this week, and then we’ll see how it goes from there in terms of Sunday,” Minter said, via the Raven social media.

Walker’s potential return would provide additional depth and speed for the debut of offensive coordinator Declan Doyle’s new system. The third-year receiver is listed behind Zay Flowers on Baltimore’s first unofficial depth chart. Rashod Bateman holds the other starting position, with rookie Ja’Kobi Lane listed as his primary backup. Walker’s ability to stretch the field provides value even when he is not receiving a large number of targets. His speed can force safeties to respect the deep portion of the field, potentially creating additional space for Flowers, Mark Andrews and Baltimore’s running game.

The Ravens don’t have to force Walker back into the lineup if he isn’t ready. LaJohntay Wester, Lane and rookie Elijah Sarratt give Baltimore several options behind Flowers and Bateman. Wester is also listed as the team’s primary punt returner, while Lane could receive opportunities as a big-bodied target in the red zone.

Baltimore will likely receive more clarity after Walker returns to practice and tests his condition during football activities. His participation level throughout the week should better indicate his availability. The Ravens will release their first regular-season injury report on Wednesday as they continue preparing for Indianapolis. Walker’s return would give Lamar Jackson another explosive option, but Minter and the coaching staff are taking a wait-and-see approach with four days remaining before kickoff.
