Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but it’s early November, and the Dallas Cowboys have some serious issues to figure out. On Sunday, the Cowboys found another way to test their fan base’s patience, blowing a 24-10 fourth-quarter lead before falling 33-30 in overtime to the Arizona Cardinals.
The defeat dropped Dallas to 3-5, immediately adding more fuel to speculation that head coach Brian Schottenheimer could be fired midseason. However, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones made it clear in the locker room afterward that he is not contemplating a coaching change.
As longtime Cowboys reporter Ed Werder revealed, Jones told the media he doesn’t see a midseason change happening “at all,” referencing a prior in-season move to Wade Phillips.
“I made a change, and I don’t want to mention it because I’m not proud of it,” Jones said. “But I made a change with Wade Phillips there in the middle of the season, and I don’t see that here at all.”
While Schottenheimer deserves his fair share of blame for a loss the Cowboys owner called “bewildering,” Jones also pushed much of the blame away from his head coach, as The Athletic’s Jon Machota highlighted.
“I will say that a lot of people let Brian (Schottenheimer) down today,” Jones said.
