Jérémy Jacquet coy on his chances of starting for France after impressive debut

Jérémy Jacquet (22) was one of the main benefactors from Zinedine Zidane’s decision to give French supporters a taste of the next generation as he handed several debuts during Les Bleus’ 1-0 victory against Belgium on Monday evening. The former Rennes defender has impressed since he made the move to Liverpool and continued to show he belongs at the highest level with a commanding performance on his France debut.

His opportunity came about due to key injuries in defence for Les Bleus, with both Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba unavailable to the new manager. However, with an impressive display, the Liverpool centre-back has certainly given Zidane something to think about when it comes to future squad selections.

Jacquet refusing to get carried away despite positive debut

The 22-year-old spoke to TF1 after the victory against Belgium, and he was asked about his future prospects of starting under Zidane. “I’m not going to get into whether or not I’ll become a starter. I’m taking my time; I’m not overthinking it.” He added, “I’m asked to play, I’m given instructions, and I try to carry them out. Keeping a level head.”
