The new movie, which was directed and co-written by Taika Waititi, is an adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro sci-fi novel of the same name that follows an android named Klara (Jenna Ortega) who is sold as an Artificial Companion to a rural family in a dystopian future. 2026’s Klara and the Sun, which also stars Amy Adams, Natasha Lyonne, Mia Tharia, and Steve Buscemi, debuted on October 23 and eventually earned a 3-day domestic gross of $701,000, falling short of expectations. So far it has earned less than $2 million worldwide against a reported budget of at least $20 million.
Variety now reports that Sony Pictures Releasing, the studio that is distributing Klara and the Sun (which was produced by a number of production companies, including Columbia Pictures, Spyglass Media Group, HarperCollins Publishers, and 3000 Pictures), is no longer reporting the movie’s domestic box office results. ScreenRant has reached out to Sony for comment. This news, which comes in the wake of a report that Klara and the Sun‘s impending theatrical release in Spain was cancelled, has led to some confusion as to the movie’s domestic performance during its sophomore frame.
While various outlets agree that the movie continued to play in 880 domestic theaters over Halloween weekend, just as it did during its opening weekend, the exact reported gross varies widely. Box Office Mojo‘s reporting suggests that the movie earned $45,000, which sees the movie experiencing a week-on-week drop of 93.6%, which would give it the second-worst sophomore drop of all time, behind 2026’s Stray Kids: The Dominate Experience (-94.9%).
However, The Numbers reports that it earned a superior $145,000, dropping 79% (which would place it among the Top 100 sophomore drops of all time, but outside the Top 50). Several other outlets have not reported numbers for the Taika Waititi movie whatsoever.
Per The Numbers, Klara and the Sun‘s cumulative global total after 10 days in theaters is $1.84 million.
Variety‘s report also suggests that the movie was given a smaller-scale release than planned in the first place (to compare, Taika Waititi’s previous non-Marvel movie, 2023’s Next Goal Wins, opened in 2,240 domestic theaters) because Klara and the Sun reviews eviscerated it, earning it a disappointing 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences have been kinder to the movie on the same platform, giving it a Popcornmeter score of 74% with an average rating of 4 out of 5.
Regardless, this has not prevented the movie from experiencing a substantial drop, even if the exact scale of the drop remains unknown.

It ultimately seems highly unlikely that Klara and the Sun will turn a profit, as it has so far earned back less than a tenth of its reported budget. However, Sony’s box office prospects are much brighter elsewhere in the marketplace. After all, they are also the studio behind 2026’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day (the third highest-grossing movie and highest-grossing solo superhero movie of all time) and Resident Evil (which just passed the $400 million global milestone and is both the highest-grossing movie in the franchise and in Zach Cregger’s filmography).
